Abstract

Language:

This paper aims to consider the treatment of jarosite residue using different reducing agents, specifically aluminum, magnesium, and carbon. The jarosite residue in question is unusual as it contains elevated levels of Pb and Ag, as well as Indium, Gallium, and Germanium. The study presents the thermodynamical conditions of gas phase equilibrium related to the experiments, along with predominance diagrams that illustrate the potential for extracting critical metals in the metallic phase. The results indicate that using a combination of aluminum and magnesium as reducing agents effectively fumes Zn and Pb at a processing temperature of 1200 °C. However, magnesium alone, as well as carbon in the mixture of reducing agents, results in subpar outcomes for zinc fuming, a phenomenon explained by modeling the studied compositions. This research highlights the complexities involved in efficient metal recovery from jarosite residues and provides valuable insights into potential innovative approaches for valorization of these materials.
