Abstract

Language:

The environmental assessment of new ironmaking processes at POSCO was conducted to evaluate emissions reduction of air pollutants and CO₂ compared to traditional blast furnaces. The study elucidates the environmental benefits associated with the new processes, particularly regarding the decreases in SOₓ and NOₓ emissions. Furthermore, the assessment reveals that the new processes not only reduce CO₂ emissions but also enhance energy optimization through technological advancements. The methodologies employed included a comprehensive analysis of environmental impacts alongside technical evaluations of energy usage in iron production. The results indicate that while the new processes demonstrate significant potential for reducing air pollutant emissions, the comparative analysis on CO₂ emissions remains inconclusive due to the high carbon intensity associated with energy sources utilized in these processes. Ongoing technological improvements aim at further energy optimizations, promising economic and ecological advantages for POSCO's operations. Overall, this study highlights the vital link between innovation in ironmaking technologies and the imperative to meet escalating environmental standards.
