This document presents the proceedings of workshop no 16 from the 15th International UISPP Congress held in Lisbon in September 2006, focusing on the necessity of taphonomic approaches in archaeology. The objective was to share various taphonomic methodologies and their implications for understanding human activities through archaeological findings. The workshop included contributions from multiple experts in the field, discussing topics such as the effects of solifluction on use-wear traces of stone tools, the taphonomic approach to rock art in the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave, and estimates of archaeological coherence in paleoenvironmental contexts. The methodology involved both theoretical discussions and practical experiments, aiming to enhance the comprehension of taphonomic processes and their influence on archaeological interpretations. The results highlighted the complexity of taphonomic factors and their importance in revealing the intricacies of human behavior in prehistoric contexts. Ultimately, this compilation of research contributes significantly to the ongoing dialogue about the relevance of taphonomy in archaeology, providing valuable insights for scholars and practitioners in the field.
