In this study, the hydrometallurgical processing of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) sludge in sulphuric acid solutions was investigated under atmospheric pressure and temperatures up to 100 °C on a laboratory scale. The objective was to determine the optimal conditions for maximizing zinc recovery from the sludge. Various parameters such as sulphuric acid concentration, temperature, leaching time, and liquid-to-solid ratio (L:S) were systematically examined. The results indicated that significant leaching of zinc occurs when using 1 M sulphuric acid at 80 °C for a minimum of 15 minutes. However, these optimal conditions are specific to the particular BOF sludge studied, highlighting the need for tailored leaching tests due to the variability in chemical and mineralogical composition of steelmaking dusts. This research contributes to the understanding of effective methods for recovering valuable metals from hazardous steelmaking waste, thereby providing insights into more sustainable practices in the steel industry.
