In Nigeria, elections have been conducted using a manual voting system since the return to democracy in 1999, but this approach has been marred by electoral malpractices and operational hitches, including violent attacks on voters, result manipulation, vote buying, and the remoteness of polling centers. These challenges necessitate the development and implementation of an electronic voting system to address most of these problems. Nigeria’s first-ever electronic voting election was introduced on February 6, 2018, by the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM), which appointed EMPTECH to provide an integrated e-voting solution for local government elections in the state. The proposed e-voting system aims to eliminate bottlenecks evident in the manual system, such as lengthy registration processes, unnecessary movement of voters, election violence, and the overall incredibility of the votes. This is achieved by developing a time-effective registration platform that registers a voter and issues a voter’s card immediately, allowing voters to cast their votes from the nearest safe and convenient polling unit so that each vote is counted where it belongs. Test results were very impressive in terms of time, security, and accuracy compared to the manual system. A system with these capabilities will significantly ameliorate the problems associated with the existing manual voting process in Nigeria.
