Ultrasonic visualization systems (UVS) for non-destructive testing, which operate in a real time mode, were investigated. Usually manufacturers declare that such UVS are designed for diagnosis of subsurface defects in solids and composite materials. However, the acoustic images obtained with UVS do not reliably present information about defect sizes and locations, which limits their utility for decision-making regarding an object's condition. This paper addresses the necessity for metrological evaluation of UVS to provide unbiased and quantitative assessments of testing results. The study outlines specific tasks for this evaluation, proposes essential characteristics for assessing UVS performance, and investigates the instrumental methodologies for determining these characteristics. The methodology for the metrological evaluation of UVS is detailed, emphasizing its importance for generating valuable and reliable diagnostic outputs. Results indicate that effective evaluation enhances the reliability of acoustic images rendered by UVS, thereby improving decision-making processes in non-destructive testing applications.
