Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are pivotal in the swift emergence of organic solar cells (OSCs) in the electronics market. This review provides a comprehensive exploration of numerous perylene diimide (PDI)-based NFAs in the bulk hetero-junction organic solar cells (BHJ OSCs) field, including various types of PDIs and their photovoltaic properties. We summarize N-substituted symmetrical/asymmetrical PDIs, bay substituted PDIs, and star-shaped PDIs, emphasizing their advantages over Fullerene acceptors. Additionally, we compare the performance of the best performing PDIs with state-of-the-art NFAs and highlight recent trends and future directions for PDI-based NFAs. Through this work, we aim to advance the understanding of PDIs in OSC applications and outline their potential in developing highly efficient solar energy solutions.
