Abstract

Language:

Copper electrowinning serves as a critical industrial process for copper production, constituting about 20% of the global output. This study investigates the operational benefits of detecting and correcting metallurgical short circuits (MSCs), a common cause of inefficiencies in the electrowinning process. The objective is to quantify how MSC detection during the cathode harvest cycle can enhance operational efficiency. Methodologically, the research employs simulations to model the random propagation of MSCs within the equivalent Optibar circuit configuration, enabling a thorough analysis of the impact on production. The findings suggest that effective detection and subsequent correction of MSCs can significantly streamline operations and improve energy utilization, thereby mitigating associated costs and environmental impacts. This work contributes to the broader body of knowledge on copper electrowinning by providing insights into optimizing the process through innovative detection strategies.
