The conception of conserving electrical energy is not new to us; it is widely recognized that electrical energy is being wasted in many forms, such as copper loss and iron loss, but these are hard to compensate. This paper aims to study a prototype for automatic power factor correction using capacitor banks to increase the power factor through the reduction of reactive power. Power factor, defined as the ratio of active power to apparent power, reflects how effectively the energy provided is utilized. The methodology includes the use of an Arduino microcontroller in the project, along with current and voltage transformers for the sampling of circuit current and voltage, which are essential for measuring the power factor. The findings indicate that by adjusting capacitor banks, the load power factor can be greatly improved, leading to reduced energy losses caused by lagging power factors in electrical distribution systems. This is particularly relevant in industrial settings where large amounts of power are consumed. It is concluded that maintaining an optimal power factor can significantly mitigate energy losses.
