Abstract

Language:

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings possess excellent mechanical and tribological properties, with significant applications in medical, metalworking, and automotive industries. Despite their benefits, enhancements in adhesion and performance remain essential. This study investigates the synergetic effect of low-pressure arc plasma-assisted nitriding (PAN) treatment combined with plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) on the adhesion properties of DLC coatings applied to M2 steel. The adhesion strength of a duplex DLC and nitriding coating system is compared to that of DLC coatings on non-nitrided M2 steel substrates. Through optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vickers microhardness tests, and atomic force microscopy, the nitrided layers are thoroughly analyzed. Additionally, the DLC coatings are examined using Raman spectroscopy, confirming the presence of a-C:H DLC type. Scratch testing, corroborated by optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy, reveals enhanced adhesion properties on plasma nitrided surfaces. Results indicate a significant improvement in the adhesion of the DLC coatings when applied to plasma nitrided M2 steel, providing valuable insights into the optimization of coating architectures for industrial applications.
