Government regulations around the world concerning environmental care are becoming more stringent, including regulations on the deposition and use of dust, sludge, and slag generated in the iron and steelmaking process. By-products such as iron-contaminated dust, sludge, oxide fines, mill scales, and slag have become valuable resources, making recycling a potentially profitable activity within steel plants. With integrated steel plants generating up to ten percent in mass of total steel output from dust, sludge, and mill scale by-products, along with over 40% in slag by-products, effective recycling methods are crucial. However, unmodified BOF slag often has a low value and is restricted by environmental regulations. This paper outlines innovative solutions for recycling by-product fines through cold briquetting technology and the modification and granulation of steelmaking slag to enhance the value of these by-products and create marketable products.
