Leaching is a natural process where water-soluble substances, such as calcium, fertilizers, and pesticides, are washed out from soil or waste, potentially leading to pollution of surface and subsurface water. This study focuses on the leachability of metals in municipal solid waste (MSW), a significant concern for municipal solid waste management in terms of human health and environmental risk assessment. A literature review highlights over 100 leaching methods, yet this study investigates four specific leaching procedures to compare their effectiveness in mitigating the risks posed by heavy metals. The comparison aims to elucidate the environmental impacts associated with different leaching techniques, emphasizing the need for proper disposal and management of MSW, especially in developing countries where hazardous wastes are often mixed with regular MSW. Factors influencing leachate quality and metal mobility are analyzed to determine the appropriate methodologies for safe disposal practices and the minimization of water pollution from leachates. The findings suggest that tailored leaching approaches could enhance the management of heavy metals in waste, thereby reducing their environmental footprint.
