Melt flow in continuous casting tundishes is typically characterized by a combined model that analyzes the residence time distribution of fluid. This model considers the fluid volume in a tundish to consist of plug flow, well-mixed flow, and dead volumes. Despite being introduced over 20 years ago, its application has often been flawed, leading to incorrect calculations of dead volume in tundishes. This paper discusses the combined model in detail and highlights its proper application in understanding melt flow dynamics in tundishes. As tundishes evolve to play critical roles in delivering steel of desired quality and composition, the efficiency and optimization of molten steel flow become increasingly important. This research underscores the necessity of controlling flow characteristics within tundishes to maintain steel quality and prevent degradation. Through proper design and use of flow control devices, the modeling and simulation of metal flow can be effectively utilized to enhance tundish performance.
