Abstract

Language:

In the absence of adequate and cleaned abstract text, here is a concise abstract based on the document content: The study investigates how the availability, utilization, and maintenance of farm machinery affect mechanization and sustainable development of college farms in Nigerian colleges of education. Using a sample of 24 federal and state colleges supported by TETFund, data were collected from management, academic staff, farm personnel, and students via structured questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive statistics and mean ratings on a four-point Likert scale were used to analyze types and functionality of machinery, maintenance practices, cropping investments, and student learning outcomes. Results show that, on average, 252 machines were identified, of which 25% were tractors, 20% ploughs, 20% harrows, and 18% each ridgers and planters/fertilizer distributors, but only a small fraction of each category was functional. Mean responses (2.4, 2.2, 2.3) fell below the 2.5 decision threshold, indicating general disagreement that machinery utilization, maintenance, and use in teaching are currently adequate. The findings highlight the need for improved machinery deployment, structured maintenance programs, better operator training, and enhanced practical exposure for students to support sustainable college farm operations and self-reliance among graduates.
