Barite is an important additive material to increase the weight of excavation mud and plays a crucial role in the excavation mud industry. This study aims to analyze the effect of particle gradation on the specific gravity and viscosity of barite powder utilized in excavation mud. Through experimental methodology, various particle sizes of barite were tested, particularly those corresponding to 200 and 325 mesh. Results indicate a direct relationship between particle size reduction and a slight increase in specific gravity. Furthermore, the findings suggest that while increasing the size of barite powder particles can diminish density, such variations should be interpreted with caution due to potential laboratory error. Granulation was found to significantly influence the viscosity of barite powder, with dimensions below 325 mesh showing substantial effects on viscosity measurements. It was observed that excavation companies tend to consume more barite powder when the specific gravity of the excavation mud is lower, as barite increases specific gravity but simultaneously elevates viscosity. These dynamics highlight the complexities faced in managing the properties of excavation mud during operations.
